Summary for PIANO, written by David Herbert Lawrence, who was born on 11 September 1885AD. He died on 2 March 1930AD. He was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. In them, he confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, and instinct. Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life.

Summary Of 'PIANO':

The poem presents the nostalgic feelings of the speaker. From the present scene, he memorizes his past days. The poem is set in the dusk. In a room the speaker is listening a music played by a woman, who is a singer and a pianist. Her song take the speaker back to his childhood. He recalls the past and supposes that he is a very small boy sitting under the piano and his mother is singing and he is pressing her feet. She does not feel disturbed. She smiles at him and continues her playing. The poet knows that it is his memorable past. He wants to live in the present, facing the reality. But, the woman is very good in singing. Her song is so sweet and her playing is so skillful. The poets want to control himself, but he cannot. This time he goes back to his childhood. He supposes that he is in his warm and comfortable room. It is very cold outside. It is Sunday evening; it is the day of prayer and holiday. All his family members are there. They are singing hymns. The piano is leading them.
The song takes the poet back to the happy past. He does not like to listen to the music any more. He wants to be lost himself with his happy memory. His likes to forget the present totally. Therefore, he feels that the woman's song is the shout. Her music is no longer sweet. It is useless for her to play the piano with deep feelings. He is very happy with his childhood memories. Now he does not like to become a man. He throws his manhood and begins to cry like a child. He supposes with his mother and likes to listen to the piano just playing by his mother. He does not like to forget his past memories.
