Attempt Any Five questions.

1.

a) Classify the engineering mechanics. List out it's scope in engineering. [4+4=8]

b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant from the given system of forces. [8]

2.

a) Define centroid and centre of gravity. What is torque and couple? Define with examples. [2+2+2+2=8]

b) An electric light fixture weighting 25N hang from a point C, by two strings AC and BC. The string AC is inclined at 60⁰ to the horizontal and BC at 45⁰ to the vertical as shown in figure. Determine the forces in the strings AC and BC. [8]

3.

a) Prove that Moment of inertia of a triangle about x-x is bh³/36 where b=breadth of triangle and h=height of a triangle. [8]

b) A semi-circle is removed from the trapezium as shown in figure. Determine the centroid of the remaining area. [8]

4.

a) Define static and dynamic friction. What is angle of repose? Explain with figure. [2+2+4=8]

b) A force of 60N pulls a weight of 60N up and inclined plane, the force being applied parallel to the plane. If the inclination of the plane is 30⁰, find the coefficient of friction. [8]

5.

a) State Newton's second law of motion. Derive the relation between force and linear momentum. [3+5=8]

b) A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly to a speed of 72 km/hr, over a distance of 500m. Find the acceleration and time taken to attain this speed. If a further acceleration raises the speed to 90 km/hr, in 10 seconds, find new acceleration and further distance moved. [8] 

6. Write short notes on: (Any Four) [4x4=16]

a) Relation between RPM torque and power.

b) Law of conservation of energy.

c) Angle of friction & coefficient of friction.

d) Angle of friction & coefficient of friction.

e) Centroid of a Rectangular figure.

f) Curvilinear motion versus Rectilinear motion.
